Diamond-doped silica aerogel for solar geoengineering

چکیده

Even though aerosol injection into stratosphere is one of the most promising solar geoengineering techniques, sulfate aerosols, which are suggested for such an application, show significant drawbacks as infra-red (IR) absorption and ozone degradation. The development new materials application that would exhibit substantial up-scattering, with non-IR to allow a cooling effect needed. Here, novel composite material comprised diamonds dispersed in silica aerogel network investigated compared pure aerogel. Silica aerogels ultralight, highly porous, transparent can host particles, while fulfilling particle size limitation terms potential health risks humans during respiration. Morphology both composites has been studied. diffuse reflectance diamond powders, aerogels, diamond-doped have measured comparison. Our experimental work assesses proposed concept materials, including discussion recommendations improvements synthetized materials. obtained results could stimulate further in-depth studies similar applications geoengineering.

Dynamic climate emulators for solar geoengineering

Climate emulators trained on existing simulations can be used to project project the climate effects that result from different possible future pathways of anthropogenic forcing, without further relying on general circulation model (GCM) simulations. We extend this idea to include different amounts of solar geoengineering in addition to different pathways of greenhouse gas concentrations, by tr...

Preparation and Characterization of Silica Aerogel Microspheres

Silica aerogel microspheres based on alkali silica sol were synthesized using the emulsion method. The experimental results revealed that the silica aerogel microspheres (4-20 µm in diameter) were mesoporous solids with an average pore diameter ranging from 6 to 35 nm. The tapping densities and specific surface areas of the aerogel microspheres are in the range of 0.112-0.287 g/cm³ and 207.5-66...

Optical shock waves in silica aerogel.

Silica aerogels are materials well suited for high power nonlinear optical applications. In such regime, the non-trivial thermal properties may give rise to the generation of optical shock waves, which are also affected by the structural disorder due to the porous solid-state gel. Here we report on an experimental investigation in terms of beam waist and input power, and identify various regime...

Stratospheric solar geoengineering without ozone loss.

Injecting sulfate aerosol into the stratosphere, the most frequently analyzed proposal for solar geoengineering, may reduce some climate risks, but it would also entail new risks, including ozone loss and heating of the lower tropical stratosphere, which, in turn, would increase water vapor concentration causing additional ozone loss and surface warming. We propose a method for stratospheric ae...

Raman spectroscopy of diamond and doped diamond.

The optimization of diamond films as valuable engineering materials for a wide variety of applications has required the development of robust methods for their characterization. Of the many methods used, Raman microscopy is perhaps the most valuable because it provides readily distinguishable signatures of each of the different forms of carbon (e.g. diamond, graphite, buckyballs). In addition i...
